"This was a moving moment, I had the honor of performing alongside HHP in support of a couple thousand student protesters in Cape Town, South Africa. They were/are rallying to increase the number of libraries in the nation's schools. Currently there are only 8% of schools with suitable libraries, so they took to the streets demanding EQUAL EDUCATION FOR ALL!!!"

Huge "THANKS" to all who joined my friends and I at Blues Alley on Monday evening. Genesis Poets, 2Deep the Poetess, Tiffany Okafor, Messiah, and 13 of Nazareth worked so diligently on ensuring the success of the event. With the first show sold out and a fervent audience at the second show, it was indeed successful. All who attended had a blast. I feel that my ancestors were also in attendance and on one accord.

Catch me and my band next with Tamika Love Jones at Bohemian Caverns on April 22. Tickets are available now at www.bohemiancaverns.com.

John Chambers is the Chief Gardener at BloomBars, the community arts space at which I am a resident. Always with camera in tow, he shot this exclusive footage at one of our last rehearsals before the Blues Alley shows.   Here's a sneak peak at how all of the fun came together.

First I Wanna Thank My Momma....

Individual Artist Award.

Here's the Press Release from Governor Martin O'Malley:
 http://www.msac.org/docs_uploaded/IAA_MR.pdf

Join me Monday night with my fellow BloomBars residents and favorite poets at
"U Street Comes to Blues Alley: Carolyn Malachi & Friends", my next stop on this
road to the 2K10 Grammys.

GREAT-GRANDDAUGHTER OF JAZZ LEGEND DEBUTS AT BLUES ALLEY

Carolyn Malachi Brings U-Street Artists to Historic Jazz Landmark

Washington, D.C. – In the late 40s and 50s, legendary jazz pianist John Malachi shared the stage with Billy Eckstine, Illinois Jacquet, Louis Jordan, Pearl Bailey, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, and Joe Williams. A half century later, Malachi’s great-granddaughter Carolyn is blazing a trail of her own—On March, 15th at 8:00 and 10pm, Carolyn will perform at Blues Alley (Tickets $20) during the "U Street Comes to Blues Alley: Carolyn Malachi & Friends" event produced by Genesis Poets, Producer of the Annual DC Poetry Festival. (This year the DC Poetry Festival will be held on August 27, 2010 at the Carter Baron Amphitheatre. )

(Carolyn Malachi with Smart Chick at the Bruma Market in Johannesburg, South Africa - 2/14/10)

With her unique style that blends traditional jazz with R&B, Hip Hop, and spoken word, Carolyn has been the talk of the DC music scene for the last year. Most recently, she was selected to be an Artist-in-Bloom Resident Fellow at BloomBars, an arts organization working to unite communities through the arts and nurture artists committed to serving the community. As leader of Smart Chicks, Inc., a local organization that develops visibility for women in the arts, Carolyn launched the Revenge of the Smart Chicks movement, the goal of which is to release women from the confines of popular opinion. She uses her music, what she calls a "unique blend of haute-eclectic-soular-blues" to advance the movement.

“Carolyn’s potential is limitless. Rarely do we find an artist who has the drive and determination to match their talent. Equally impressive is her commitment to serving her community, and empowering women in particular. I’m sure if her great grandfather were alive today, he would be beaming with pride,” said John R. Chambers, founder of BloomBars.

As part of a BloomBars artist exchange program, Carolyn had the chance to perform and record with South African Hip Hop icon, Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP). HHP was so impressed with Carolyn, he flew her and several other Artist in Bloom Residents to Johannesburg, South Africa for a concert celebrating the cross-continental connection. The reception, and standing ovation she received by the crowd only hints at her potential reach audiences around the globe.

Hi, brilliant people. It's almost time for Blues Alley and we are aggressively punting the U Street Comes to Blues Alley: Carolyn Malachi and Friends event on Monday, March 15. My Smart Chick mentee/intern wrote this press release which I would like to distribute on Wednesday morning. If you have an eye for editing, will you take a look at it to help edit it? Please write your feedback in the comments section. Thanks!

Carolyn Malachi: the hottest dish at Blues Alley
Firing up jazz lovers everywhere, vocalist/emcee Carolyn Malachi is headed to the alley—Blues Alley, that is.
Hit single, “Orion,” from her latest album, Revenge of the Smart Chicks III: Eclectic Company, sent shockwaves through Johannesburg, South Africa as Malachi dished a familiar yet nonetheless delectable mix of fierce vocals, dope rhymes and a mean band to match. The supernova just barely cooled her heels and now, she’s headed north. Surely, Georgetown should brace itself for the shooting star headed its way.
Born 1965, Blues Alley jazz club has become a Georgetown landmark, housing the ensembles of Grover Washington Jr., Nancy Wilson, Sara Vaughn, Phyllis Hyman, Najee and many more. Come March 15th, however, Georgetown’s heart of music and history makes way for none other than Malachi herself. The sensational Smart Chick is back with a vengeance, and this time, she’s got a few friends in tow as she makes her mark at the Alley, home to hot jazz and timeless treasures. Joining Malachi for this grand affair include 13 of Nazareth, Two Deep the Poetess, Tiffany Okafor and Messiah Ramkissoon.
Carolyn Malachi, founder and proud face of Smart Chicks Inc., started the organization as a hub for creativity and individuality among women in the arts. “Ambition, brains and candor” are the three-course entrée, and everyone’s VIP by making the daily smart decision to be yourself. Embodying the Smart Chick mantra enticingly and without pause, Malachi is ready to serve her alterjazzhop mantra hot and steamy.
Experience Carolyn Malachi and friends, March 15, 2010 at 8pm and 10pm. Tickets are $20 and they’re moving fast; get yours today at www.bluesalley.com.
Carolyn Malachi at Blues Alley is a must-see show that will surely deliver a night to remember. Bring your friends, family or just yourself, and expect excellence at its essence.
Find yourself fiending? Keep up with Carolyn at www.facebook.com/CMalachi; follow her via www.twitter.com/Carolyn_Malachi and be sure to tune in for new postings at www.youtube.com/Malachimusic. For more information about Smart Chicks Inc., visit the official website at www.smartchicksinc.org.
