I think I see where you're going. While I still feel that Kanye should find a better way to voice his opinions (i.e. through his music, or during his OWN award speeches), I can definitely see a correlation between the two. At the time, my food/dining metaphors need work so I'll leave that up to you ;), but I think what your saying is something like this:
We ordered up Barack Obama by electing him president the same way we ordered up Kanye West by purchasing his albums, mixtapes, iTunes singles, etc. We ordered them specifically for what we saw on their labels. Barack Obama's read "Change" while Kanye's label read "Swagger (or hubris, or whatever you wanna call it)." We looked at what had been on our plates before and grew tired of the same old meal (the Bush Administration, Rappers who weren't MCs, and so on) and decided, "Hey, that looks gooood!" So we asked the waiter for the Barack meal and the Kanye sandwich. But, when they arrived at our table we took a look and decided we no longer want them for what they are. We forgot we were picky eaters until all their ingredients were laid out before us. All of a sudden we wanted our Barack to be a little bigger and our Kanye to have a little less spice even though the menu explicitly broke down the ingredients. Instead of making the modifications with the waiter (i.e. during the campaign, or before Kanye got his chain) we were dazzled by "Change" and "Swagger" and forgot we would have to deal with these items on our plates. Now we're having a difficult time swallowing what we ordered even though we got exactly what we asked for. We said we wanted "change," and Obama told us he was coming after the healthcare system BEFORE we elected him into office (btw, where are those of us who support healthcare reform, why aren't we brandishing weapons at town hall meetings?). We said Kanye's "swagger" was cool with us, but then get our panties in a bunch when he displays it wherever and whenever he sees fit. We can't halve our cake and eat it too, but we sure as hell are trying...except, we want to eat it without the icing it came with.
Hope this helps, let me know if it does. Let me know if it doesn't too, because that would help me, lol. - Carolyn Malachi September 21, 2009 at 4:02 AM

Thanks. I'm going to see what works and will post the final piece for sure. But , D, did Americans order up Obama, or did he sort of appear and end up in our take-away bag like a cheesy food sample that most of us appeared to like?

Yeah, I definitely see your point...we're running out of menu options here. Lower quality competition = Lower quality final choice. Would he have stood up to a gourmet selection, or is he just a flashy hot wheels Happy Meal "surprise"?

Heres what I think hopw it helps some:-)
Not sure if this is the route you wanted to go but here are my thoughts (and keeping with the food theme that you started with)
Kanye West and those who oppose Universal health care wish to throw salt and keep the menu the same by always highlighting the same dish Would you like fires with that …
While Barack Obama's and Beyonce ask would you like a side salad instead of fries. They see that we all need a chance to be included on this American plate. That yes America will always love its well seasoned foods but needs to embrace a new style of cooking in order to be more diverse and healthy.
Its often that we will focus on the person adding the salt to this dish then to pay attention to how the meal will turn out in the end. The focus should be on if everyone who dines is proved with all that the bodies needs to be healthy a balanced meal. While Kanye’s approach left a bad taste in our mouths focusing on the negative wont move us forward. Just like people focusing on The Changes to the our health care menu By our president. Yes the changes may be a bit radical for you but it will proved what the American body needs as whole to be healthy. We just don’t want to pay attention to the heart of the nation (its rich) but to each limb the hands and feet (workers) of America that make this body complete.
