About The Cornel West Theory:

The Cornel West theory is a Washington, D.C. based hip-hop band. With the blessing of Dr. Cornel West, the Princeton University professor and renowned author, the band takes its name from his prolific writings and philosophies that have shaped contemporary thought throughout the world.

Inspired by the rich musical history of the nation’s capital and the struggles of poor people worldwide, the band was created in 2004 as a response to social oppression everywhere. They are here to deliver music that holds a mirror up to the world, with a core focus on political, cultural and spiritual commentary.

The band’s purpose is to speak the truth to the masses, while communicating to young and old alike. They create soulful music that entertains, informs, educates and provokes awareness and activism. Their sound, filled with drums, bass, piano, and electronic sounds, contains elements of all great music – from home grown Go-Go to jazz to rock to hip-hop.

Their music is rooted in hip-hop, but that single genre does not define the range and variety of the musicians in the group

SNCC at 50

Remembering a student movement that changed America forever.

  •
In July 1962, I went with two students from Jackson, Mississippi's sit-in movement to a little town in Sunflower County called Ruleville. We'd only been in town for a couple of days when, while walking down a dirt road, a car stopped in front of us. A white man holding a pistol ordered us into the car. He was the mayor. He was also a justice of the peace; he owned the town's hardware store and headed the local White Citizens' Council......

    Sister Bohemia Takes Bohemian Caverns
    April 22
    Bohemian Caverns
    11th & U Street, N.W., Washington, DC 20009
    8 p.m.

Experience the rapture of Sister Bohemia. Hosted by Simone Jacobson, this event is a must-see, featuring musical guests, Tamika “Love” Jones and Carolyn Malachi.

Tamika Love Jones, a DC native and representative in her own right, charms music lovers with a gospel-jazz tonality aimed to touch the soul. Her development into music after losing loved ones to drugs and violence deems Jones’ art even more imperative as it penetrates the lives of young people, the heart of her community. Invited to work with the likes of artists Faith Evans, Mya and Grammy Award Winner, songwriter, Denise Rich, Jones is no stranger to the prospect of stardom; still, she walks her own path, performing at live festivals, private events, and especially community affairs, where her music moves the hearts and hopes of many.

Moving and shaking her audience, not to mention the jazz genre altogether, is Smart Chicks Inc. founder and poster chick, Carolyn Malachi. Having finished a February tour in sunny South Africa, only to bring a hot spell to Georgetown’s Blues Alley, the trailblazer makes her way to Bohemian Caverns, where the day is hot, but the night will blaze. Also a Maryland-DC dweller, Malachi continues to advance theRevenge of the Smart Chicks movement with what she calls a “haute-eclectic-soular-blues.” Great-granddaughter to jazz pianist, John Malachi, and acclaimed activist as well, Carolyn Malachi is nothing short of a headliner.

    Also on Deck
Tamika and Carolyn will be styled by Madia Willis, designer and owner of BiriBelle clothing. The afrochic clothing line was inspired by Willis' study abroad experience in Ghana. The BiriBelle logo comes from the symbol “hye wonhye,” (shay-wo-en-shey) meaning “permanent or unburnable.” It’s no question, Willis is here to stay.
This event is sponsored by Fusicology, Mr. Briggs Management, BiriBelle Clothing, and Smart Chicks Inc. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. The event commences at Bohemian Caverns, 8p.m. on 11th and U Street, April 22, 2010.
